Aanchal was founded in 1984 by Sudarshan Bhuhi MBE who – while working for a charity called Community Links – responded to the need of an Asian woman who had been subjected to domestic abuse. This lead to the birth of Apna Ghar – an arm of Community Links. In 2005, Apna Ghar had grown to such a level that Su decided to establish Aanchal as an independent charity. Aanchal is based in Newham, Great Britain and mainly operates in all the London boroughs but we provide support to Asian women on a national level.
Domestic violence and abuse is not someone else’s problem. It affects the very fabric of society in very real and negative ways. Aanchal believes that people and communities have a moral duty not to turn a blind eye to the suffering of others. In Asian communities the problem is exacerbated by the traditional and unsupportive attitudes that still prevail.
